What Happens During a Repointing Project?

Repointing is straightforward when it is done properly, but the detail matters. Here is what a typical job involves.
Assessment
We look at the wall, check the condition of the mortar and bricks, and work out why the joints have failed and what mortar the wall needs.
Raking out
The failed mortar is raked out to a suitable depth, carefully, so the edges of the bricks are not damaged. On older buildings this is done by hand where appropriate.
Preparation
The joints are brushed out and dampened down so the new mortar bonds properly and is not dried out too quickly.
Filling and finishing
The mortar is worked firmly into the joints in layers, then finished to match the existing profile so it sheds water and looks right.
Curing
Fresh mortar, particularly lime, needs time and protection to harden properly. We protect the work from sun, wind and rain during this period.
