Why Proper Mortar Preparation Matters

A good mortar poorly prepared, or applied to badly prepared joints, will not last. Preparation is as important as the mix itself.
Getting the joint ready
Joints need to be raked out to a suitable depth, brushed clean and dampened down so the new mortar bonds and is not dried out too quickly by thirsty brickwork.
Mixing consistently
A consistent, well-gauged mix gives even colour and strength. Guesswork with proportions leads to patchy colour and uneven performance.
Working in layers
Deeper joints are filled in layers, each allowed to firm up, so there are no voids behind the face for water to sit in.
Right conditions
Mortar applied in the wrong weather can dry out too fast or be damaged by frost. Good practice means working in suitable conditions and protecting the work while it cures.
