Repointing Listed and Period Properties

Repointing Listed and Period Properties

Older and listed buildings need a more careful approach than a modern house. The wrong materials or methods can do lasting harm.

Compatible materials

Older bricks and stone are usually softer and generally need a compatible, breathable mortar rather than a hard modern mix. The existing historic mortar should be understood before any decisions are made.

Careful removal

Excessive or careless raking out can damage the edges and faces of old masonry. Removal should be done by hand where appropriate, and no more than necessary.

Appearance

The colour of the mortar, the aggregate and the joint finish all affect the character of the building, so careful matching matters.

Consent and conservation

Listed buildings can involve consent or conservation requirements depending on the work. We cannot give a blanket answer on whether a job needs consent, so we encourage the appropriate checks where necessary and work sensitively within any requirements.
