How Long Does Repointing Last?

Good repointing should last for decades. Exactly how long depends on a few things that are worth understanding.

The quality of the work

Proper raking out, good preparation, mortar worked well into the joints and finished correctly all make a real difference to how long the work lasts.

The right mortar

A mortar suited to the wall will weather correctly and protect the masonry. The wrong mortar can fail early or even damage the brickwork.

Exposure

Elevations that take the full force of the weather will always wear faster than sheltered ones. This is normal and expected.

Getting the most from it

Keeping gutters and downpipes clear, and dealing with small problems early, helps repointing last as long as possible.
